Remodeled tile shower with a built-in niche and glass door in an Eau Claire home

Bathroom Remodel Cost in Eau Claire, WI

Most bathroom renovations in the Eau Claire area run $8,000 to $25,000, with full gut-and-rebuilds above that. Here's what puts a project in each range.

Average Bathroom Remodel Cost in Eau Claire

Most bathroom remodels we build in the Eau Claire area land between $15,000 and $25,000. That middle range covers new tile, a new tub or shower, a vanity, lighting, and ventilation, which is what most homeowners mean when they say they want to redo a bathroom. Focused upgrades that keep everything where it is start around $8,000. Projects that strip the room to the studs and move plumbing run $25,000 and up.

Those ranges are wide for a reason: two bathrooms of the same size can cost very different amounts. The price follows scope. How much comes out, whether anything moves, and what turns up when the old walls come down matter more than square footage. Below are the three tiers, what pushes a project from one to the next, and when a single replacement is a better use of your money than a remodel. For everything else we do in bathrooms, start at our bathroom remodeling page.

One thing that isn't in our numbers: showroom overhead. We don't lease or staff a showroom, so the estimate is built from the labor, materials, and specialty work your bathroom needs.

Bathroom Renovation Cost by Tier

Every bathroom we quote fits one of three tiers. Scope decides the tier, not the size of the room.

$8,000 to $15,000 · Focused Upgrade

Shower or tub replacement, new flooring, new vanity and fixtures, paint. The footprint stays the same and no plumbing is relocated. Usually two to three weeks of work depending on materials. Most small bathrooms and half baths fall in this tier.

$15,000 to $25,000 · Substantial Remodel

Full tile work, a new tub or shower, vanity, lighting, ventilation, and possibly minor layout changes. Three to five weeks. This is where most bathroom projects land, and it's the closest thing to an average bathroom remodel cost we can honestly give you.

$25,000+ · Full Gut and Rebuild

Down to the studs, layout changes, plumbing relocation, possibly moving walls. Five to eight weeks depending on scope. Aging-in-place renovations with curbless showers and accessibility features usually fall here. Our full bathroom remodel page covers what a down-to-the-studs project includes.

Every tier includes the permits and inspections the work requires. They're priced into the written estimate, not added afterward.

What Moves a Bathroom Remodel Between Cost Tiers

Moving Fixtures, Permits, and Inspections

Keeping the toilet, sink, and shower where they are is the biggest single way to hold a project in the lower tiers. Swapping fixtures on the existing rough-ins is mostly finish work, and cosmetic swaps like that generally don't need a plumbing permit. Moving them is different. In the City of Eau Claire, a plumbing permit has to be obtained by a licensed master plumber, or by an owner who lives in the home, before any fixture is added or removed, including adding or removing pipes. Moving a wall needs a building permit as well.

Relocated plumbing also gets a rough-in inspection after framing, with the drain, waste, and vent piping pressure-tested (5 pounds for 15 minutes) before the walls can close. The city books inspections for the next day when they're requested by 3:00 pm, so we plan the schedule around them. That added trade time is why plumbing relocation sits in the top tier. We pull the permits and schedule inspections with the city's Inspections Division as part of the project.

Hidden Repairs in Older Eau Claire Homes

Much of Eau Claire's housing stock is old enough to hide galvanized supply lines, cast-iron drains, plaster and lath, or water damage in the subfloor under a tub or toilet. None of it shows during a walkthrough. When we can see signs, like a soft floor near the tub, we price for them. When we can't, the estimate names them as possible unknowns and explains how each would be handled. Replacing corroded supply lines or a rotted section of subfloor can move a focused upgrade into the next tier, and it's better to know that's possible before demo than after.

Tile, Fixture, and Vanity Selections

Finishes are the variable you control. Tile selection alone can swing a budget by several thousand dollars, between the price of the material and the labor of setting it. Glass enclosures, valve and trim packages, and vanity tops add up the same way. The estimate shows where those dollars sit, so you can trade up in one place and save in another.

Ventilation and Electrical Updates

Many older bathrooms have an undersized exhaust fan or none at all, and wiring that predates current expectations for a wet room. A remodel is the time to fix both, while the walls and ceiling are open. New fan ducting, added lighting, and updated outlets are part of why the substantial tier costs more than a focused upgrade, and they're what keeps new tile and paint from mildewing.

When a Single Replacement Costs Less Than a Bathroom Remodel

Sometimes the honest answer is that you don't need a remodel. If the floor is solid, the plumbing is sound, and one thing is worn out, replacing that one thing costs less than any remodel tier. Those are smaller jobs for us, and we'll still tell you when one is the right call. Our published prices for common single-item projects:

  • Shower: solid-surface replacement $4,500 to $8,000; custom tile shower $8,000 to $15,000. Details on our shower replacement page.
  • Bathtub: direct alcove replacement $3,500 to $6,500; tub with new surround and fixtures $6,500 to $12,000. See bathtub replacement.
  • Tub-to-shower conversion: $6,000 to $10,000 with a solid-surface surround; $10,000 to $16,000 in tile. See tub-to-shower conversions.
  • Walk-in tub: $8,000 to $14,000 for a standard installation. See walk-in tubs.
  • Vanity: a new vanity, top, and faucet runs $1,500 to $4,500 installed.

The tipping point is when the list grows. Once you're replacing the shower and the vanity and the floor, separate jobs start to cost more than doing them together as a focused upgrade, because demo, plumbing, and finish work happen once instead of three times.

How Your Bathroom Remodel Estimate and Payments Work

A free, written estimate
It starts with a free in-home consultation. The written estimate that follows breaks out labor, materials, and specialty items, so you can see what each decision costs before you commit.
When the price can change
Only if something hidden turns up once walls or floors are open. Possible unknowns are flagged in the estimate ahead of time. If one appears, we document it, walk you through what it means, price the fix, and do nothing extra until you sign off. A price that holds after demo day is the point of putting it in writing.
Deposit and milestone payments
A deposit secures your spot on the schedule and covers initial material orders. Remaining payments are tied to milestones agreed on in the contract. We don't ask for payment in full upfront.
Financing and phasing
We don't offer in-house financing. Many customers use a home equity line of credit from their bank or credit union. If the budget works better in stages, we can phase the project and plan the first stage so the second doesn't tear it out.
Who you deal with
We're licensed and insured in Wisconsin, and you have one point of contact from the estimate to the final walkthrough. More answers are on our FAQ page, or contact us directly.
FAQ

Bathroom Remodel Cost FAQs

How much does a small bathroom remodel cost?
A small bathroom or half bath typically falls in our $8,000 to $15,000 tier: new fixtures, flooring, vanity, and paint in the existing layout. Less floor and wall area means less tile and labor, but plumbing, fixtures, and trade visits cost about the same as in a larger room, so a small bath does not scale down as far as people expect. Moving fixtures pushes it higher.
How much does a full bathroom remodel cost in Eau Claire?
A full bathroom renovation usually falls in our middle or top tier: $15,000 to $25,000 for full tile, a new tub or shower, vanity, lighting, and ventilation, and $25,000 or more once the room goes down to the studs or the plumbing moves. Our Full Bathroom Remodel page walks through that down-to-the-studs scope in detail.
How can I lower the cost of a bathroom remodel?
Keep the toilet, sink, and shower where they are, which avoids plumbing relocation. Choose a moderately priced tile for the large areas and spend on one feature, like a niche or accent wall. Replace only what's failing if the rest of the room is sound. And make your selections before work starts, because changing course mid-project costs more than deciding at the estimate.
Will the price change after demolition?
Only if something hidden turns up, such as corroded supply lines or a rotted subfloor, and only with your sign-off. We flag likely unknowns in the written estimate before work starts, so if one appears you already know how we would handle it. We document what we find, walk you through it, and do no extra work until you approve the change.
Does a bathroom remodel cost more outside the city of Eau Claire?
No. There is no travel surcharge anywhere in our service area, including Altoona, Chippewa Falls, Lake Hallie, Menomonie, Bloomer, Cadott, and Fall Creek. Permit offices differ outside the city, so we confirm which one handles your address before scheduling.
Do you offer financing for bathroom remodels?
We don't offer in-house financing. Many customers use a home equity line of credit through their bank or credit union, and we can stage the project in phases if that makes the budget work better. The written estimate breaks out labor, materials, and specialty items, which helps when you're talking to a lender.
